Black Fin shark originates from the Caribbean Sea. Due to the Chinese dinners insatiable and unsustainable appetite for shark fin soup; black fin shark has been added to the protected species list with appendix 2 classification. Therefore, what used to be an inexpensive exotic leather is no longer an affordable option.
Matte Finish
Matte Finish is also referred to as saddle, aniline, and desert finishes tanned with chrome agents and is the oldest and most popular of all reptile finishes. Some are true matte others are finished with waxes to give additional sheen.
About Shark Skin & Legalities
Shark skin is renowned for its course texture and prominent grains. Shark skin is prized for this quality; the finer varieties are used for shoes, handbags and other leather items. Our shark skins are tanned with extra oils to give them a softer, garment-grade feel and have the thickness and coarseness that can be accentuated by skiving to a nubuck or suede finish by applying a high-grit sandpaper.

Legalities and Conservation
Rojé stocked shark skins come from soon to be endangered highly regulated with CITES. Our skins originate from the Caribbean waters and are most often the by-products of fishing villages and international cuisine.

Shark leather is world known for its rough, course texture. In the coarser developments of shark skin, it has been used like sandpaper for polishing. However, the finer tanned shark skins are used for shoes, handbags, and other leather items. Highly sought after, these skins are by-products from fishing villages and international cuisine.
All of our leather is coming from non-endangered and non-threatened shark species and no CITES is required. Currently, we’re offering black fin species in 1 to 4 oz thickness in a rough or soft-tanned presentation.
Tanning Technique
Our shark skins have extra oils to produce a much softer, almost fabric-like or garment-grade leather. Additionally, the outer surface can be skived if a nubuck or suede finish is desired, a simple do it your self technique is to apply high grid sandpaper.
Availability
Due to high demand, shark leather availability varies greatly from season to season. Thus, we recommend carefully calculating your needed yield and purchasing enough material for your project all at once. Shark skins range from 4-10 square foot and are sold as they come in from nature.
We are currently the only seller in the marketplace with credits for blemishes and holes, other than the natural A-shape or H-shape from harvesting around the fins.
If your skins has a blemish, hole, or imperfection we credit those from the overall square footage. However, it is always was to include in your calculations an overage appropriate for your usage/pattern.
